Here you will find a simple guide to receiving Premier’s podcasts.
What is Podcasting?
Podcasting lets you automatically receive the latest episode of your chosen programme as soon as it's available. You will need to "subscribe" to receive a podcast, just like you would subscribe to a magazine and get it delivered each week.
In order to sign up for a podcast you need an internet connection and a piece of podcast software which is usually available free of charge. This software can check for new episodes and automatically download them for you.
Step 1: Get some podcast software
You need to install a piece of software which will search the web to find the latest episode and automatically deliver it to your computer.
Premier recommends Apple’s iTunes software, which is compatible with iPods.
You can also use other software if you prefer, or if you have a different portable media player to the iPod. A comprehensive list of software is available on podcastingnews.com.
Step 2: Subscribe
Once you have the software installed you need to subscribe to some podcasts.
If you have iTunes
Browse to the programme’s web page that you want to subscribe to, and click on “Get The Podcast”. Click on the iTunes Subscribe button and iTunes should automatically open and subscribe you to the podcast. The first episode should being to download straight away!
You can also subscribe to some podcasts through the iTunes Podcast Directory.
If this doesn’t work, then you can follow the method outlined below for other podcast software.
If you have other podcast software
If you have another piece of software then you need to add the "feed" of the podcast to your software. The feed is really just the address of the podcast, which the software will go to each time it wants to check for a new episode.
You can find the feed for any Premier podcast by browsing to the programme’s web page that you want to subscribe to, and clicking on “Get The Podcast”. Click on the Subscribe button (not the iTunes Subscribe button) and the feed will open in a new window. The feed address will appear in the address bar of your internet browser. It will start with “http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/...” and end with “...Feed.aspx”
You will need to copy this feed address and paste it into your podcast software. How you do this will depend on your software, but you should look out for buttons or links that say "Add" or "Subscribe".
Step 3: Listen
When a new episode becomes available for the podcast you have subscribed to, your software will automatically download it. For audio, you can then listen to this episode on your computer or transfer it to your portable media player to listen to later. Note that for video, the episode should play on your computer but will only play on certain portable media players and mobile phones, such as the iPod Video. Please check with the manufacturer of your device to ensure that it supports the MP4 format.
You may want to check the settings of your podcast software for details including how often it will check for new episodes, whether it will keep old episodes for you etc. This will vary depending on the software you have chosen, and your personal preferences.
If you decide that you no longer want to receive podcast episodes then it should be very easy to unsubscribe. Again, how you do this will depend on your software, but you should look for "Clear" or "Unsubscribe" options.
